Rise of Social Media
Thanks to the phenomenal rise of the internet, the social media landscape is growing exponentially and constantly evolving. Users want more and more from their online experience - instead of just being fed with information, they want to interact, contribute and feel part of an online community. Joining a social network on Facebook, uploading photos on Flickr, blogging, and contributing to Wikipedia, are all interactive elements that are shaping the Web 2.0 world.
If you aren't convinced about the growth of Web 2.0 and social media networks, here is something to make you sit up and take notice.
According to Comscore, a highly trusted global Internet research company, in a typical month:
- Just under 2/3rds of everyone who goes online worldwide, visits MySpace
- And 30% of them visited Facebook
- 35% of them visit YouTube
- And 27% of them visit Wikipedia
This all becomes even more important when you realize that the number of active users for most of the social media sites doubles every 6 months.
And these people are not just a bunch of high-school kids. Well over 50% of all FaceBook and MySpace users are older than 25.
There is indeed a large segment of Internet traffic OUTSIDE the search engines, waiting for you to tap into.
